Fire Safety
DON'T be one of the 6,000 Americans who die in fires every year, follow these easy tips to stay safe in your home.
Throughout the house
DO install a smoke detector on every floor.
DO plan your escape routes in case fire does strike.
DO practice fire drills in your home.
DON'T allow children to handle matches and/or lighters
Bedroom
DON'T smoke in bed.
DON'T place heaters within three feet of flamable materials.
DON'T use heaters to dry clothes.
DON'T use extension cords with portable heaters.
DON'T leave heaters unattended or go to sleep while they are on.
DO unplug heaters after you turn them off.
Living/Family room
DON'T put ashtrays on chair or sofa arms.
DON'T run electrical cords under rugs, over nails or in high traffic areas.
DON'T leave unattended cigarettes burning in ashtrays.
DON'T staple electrical cords to walls or otherwise pierce the insulation.
Kitchen
DON'T leave food unattended on the stove, if you must leave the kitchen, take a wooden spoon or potholder as a reminder.
DON'T cook wearing sleeves that can dangle near the burners.
DON'T use your oven to heat your home.
DON'T let crumbs build up in your toaster.
DON'T overload electrical outlets with appliances.
DON'T let curtain hang near your range.
DO check the kitchen before bed. Oven off? Coffee pot unplugged?

SAFE AT HOME FIRE PREVENTION CHECKLIST
__Smoke detectors placed near bedrooms, away from air vents.
__At least one smoke detector on every floor.
__Smoke detector batteries checked regularly.
__Emergency numbers posted near telephone.
__Well lit kitchen and hallways.
__Doors, hallways, and stairways clear of obstructions.
__No flammable material (such as curtains or towels) within three feet of space heaters or stove.
__No flammable liquids stored near ignition sources.
__No frayed or cracked electrical cords.
__No electrical cords under rugs, over nails or in high traffic areas.
__No overloaded electrical outlets or extension cords; no unusually warm outlets.
__No electrical cords near sink or range.
__All fuses in fuse box are correct size.
__All outlets have cover plates and no exposed wiring.
__No alternate heaters hooked up to extension cords.
__No alternate heaters placed where they can be knocked over.
__Heaters are unplugged after you turn them off.
__No grease on stove or oven.
__Rubber floor mat in front of stove to prevent slipping.
__No small pans on large burners or large pans on small burners.
__Dish towels are not used as potholders.
__No ashtrays on chair or sofa arms or near beds.
__Chimneys clean and free of debris.
